It is especially beneficial when a translator can appreciate the position of the agency and vice versa. The understanding of both of these perspectives can be very valuable in terms of handling assignments. Some agencies may have been founded by translators who understand how to judge translation jobs, but in many cases that is not the case and in many cases, this leads to unrealistic expectations of translators in terms of turnaround time, quality of service and cost.

Proverbs
“It is impossible not to lose something when you translate an extended text from one language to another” (Carson, ILD, 58).
“Every reading of a text by a finite being is an interpretation of it…. translation is never a mechanical task…. Translators must understand the donor text, or think they do, before rendering it into the receptor text” (Carson, ILD, 72).
The Internet and the Translation Profession
It's a commonplace to state that the Internet has profoundly changed our profession. It has erased distances and national borders, and it's providing us with research tools of which we had never dreamed before.
Depending on where you live and how comfortable you feel with the new, ever-changing technologies, you may consider the Internet a curse or a blessing. How did it change yourway of doing translations and doing business, and what would be your advice to your colleagues on facing the challenges of this Brave New Cyberworld of ours?

Being a translator
"El lector ideal es un traductor.
Es capaz de desmenuzar un texto,
retirarle la piel, cortarlo hasta la médula,
seguir cada arteria y cada vena
y luego poner en pie a un nuevo ser viviente."
